About:

Birkbeck College was founded in 1823 as the Mechanics' Institution dedicated to the education of working people so that artisans and craftsmen could learn about science, art and economics. In 1830 the institution was one of the first colleges to admit women as students. By 1858 it was accepting students who could not afford to study full-time. In 1920 it became part of the University of London.

Birbeck College now offers many evening courses for full-time undergraduates. Over 90 percent of students are over 24 years old and about one in four are from an ethnic minority. The college offers 1000 diploma courses and continuing education certificates, undergraduate and foundation degree programmes and over 90 postgraduate programmes and research opportunities.
