With its 44 state affiliates NAADAC, the Association for Addiction Professionals [NAADAC] represents more than 75,000 addiction counselors, educators and related professionals in the U.S., Canada and abroad, making it the largest network of alcoholism and drug abuse treatment professionals in the United States.

NAADAC was founded in 1974 as the National Association of Alcoholism Counselors and Trainers with a primary focus on alcohol and drug addiction counselors, but since has enlarged its purview to include tobacco and gambling addiction prevention and treatment counselors. It was renamed in 1972 as the National Association for Alcoholism and Drug Abuse Counselors. Its current name was adopted in 2001.

Note: NAADAC has ended its partnership with the National Conference on Addiction Disorders [NCAD].

NAMI (formerly the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) is an international, nonprofit, grassroots, self-help, support and advocacy organization of onsumers, families, and friends of people with severe mental illnesses, such as schizophrenia, major depression, bipolar disorder, obsessive-ompulsive disorder, and anxiety disorders.

Founded in 1979, NAMI has more than 210,000 members who seek equitable services for people with severe mental illnesses, which are known to be physical brain disorders. Working on the national, state, and local levels with its 1,200 affiliates in all 50 US states, NAMI provides education about severe brain disorders, supports increased funding for research, and advocates for adequate health insurance, housing, rehabilitation, and jobs for people with serious psychiatric illnesses.
