The Centre for Public Health specialises in applied research and educational programmes addressing health issues at all levels from policy development to service delivery. CPH is committed to a multi-disciplinary approach to public health and works in partnership with health services, local authorities, judicial bodies, environmental services and community groups.

The Centre is a WHO Collaborating Centre for Violence Prevention and works with WHO to support and develop violence prevention in the UK and internationally.

In partnership with the North West Regional Director of Public Health and the Regional Director of the Health Protection Agency, the Centre acts as UK Focal Point for Violence and Injury Prevention. The Centre also chairs the Violence Prevention Alliance Working Group on Youth Violence, Alcohol and Nightlife.

The centre seeks to promote and facilitate a public health approach to violence prevention through conducting original research, systematic literature reviews and maintaining intelligence systems for measuring and monitoring violence. In addition to violence prevention, the Centre for Public Health has a broad research, intelligence and teaching portfolio that also specializes in alcohol and drug use, sexual health, environmental health and public health intelligence.
